Campbell doctors are also examining other alternative approaches to reducing the pain of individuals who have gone through elective shoulder surgeries and would normally start an opioid-painkiller regimen.

Representatives of the clinic have stated that almost 8 percent of the opioids prescribed are attributed to orthopedic surgeons who see patients experiencing pain. “We want to bring the percentage down,” they stated.

Other medical institutions in Memphis, such as the Baptist Memorial Hospital, have been looking to curb opioid abuse.

The hospital started a very successful program a little over a year ago to lower the number as well as the potency of the opioid prescriptions in the area.
