The data highlights some urgencies considering “there have been increases in many diseases and conditions in which alcohol plays a role, during the study years,” Grant said. “Increased drinking may also portend increases in these conditions also like liver cirrhosis and hypertension.”

The researchers deduced that nearly 30 million Americans — 12.7 percent of the population — are suffering from an alcohol addiction.

Families and communities can avoid becoming addicted to alcohol by not drinking excessively and instead focusing on moderate drinking, Grant concluded.
