The typical cost of ICU overdose admissions also jumped by 58 percent during the same time period, from $58,517 to $92,408, according to the paper published in the Annals of the American Thoracic Society.
“The take-home message from our research is that the opioid epidemic has reached a new level of crisis,” she said.
The researchers described opioid-related ICU admissions as a preventable issue and stated that there is also a need for increased resources for acute care and expansion for prevention and treatment for opioid misuse.
