They added that most addiction disorders in the U.S. are linked to alcohol consumption and that long-term patterns demonstrate a decline in the predominance of disorders associated with alcohol disorders in adults.

“The age of highest use and the highest rate of having a substance use disorder of any kind is young adulthood — 18 to 25,” Johnson said. “We need to continue these successful efforts as well as ensure that we address substance use in young adults via prevention activities that are continued past adolescence; ensuring people that have a problematic use are engaged in care quickly, and supporting recovery from substance use disorders.”
